Stones that are rare
and durable are gem stones.
"A precious stone is a
small, rare, hard stone
which has inherited from
nature the name of
beautiful." The other four
characteristics - rarity,
hardness, natural origin and
beauty together with
chemical resistance, all
constitute an acceptable
definition of a precious
stone.
Few precious stones are:-
Diamond, Ruby, Emerald and
Sapphire.
Semi Precious Stones
All other stones which are
sufficiently attractive to
be used in jewellery but are
not so rare are termed as
the semi precious stones.
Such as :- Opal,
Jade, Amethyst, Aquamarine,
Garnet, Pearls etc.
Synthetic Stones
The inherent difficulty in
obtaining synthetic
diamonds, at compe- titive
prices, is responsible for
the development of
artificial stones, thus
described because they have
no counterpart in nature.
While there are many
different coloured precious
stones, and low or modestly
priced synthetic forms of
the more expensive ones,
such as ruby and emerald,
have been developed to and
on with of the market, there
are very few colourless
natural precious stones,
apart from diamond.
The two
closest to diamond are
zircon and colourless
corundum, neither of which
has outstanding qualities.
These are man-made stones
which look like real gem.
